Design & Features

Comes in black with blue accents or black with gray accents, the Over-the-Ear Sony MDR-ZX770BT has a simple and clean design built with quality materials which make it very solid and durable. It measures 8.7 x 2.9 x 10.3 inches and weighs 1.5 lbs. It is very light in weight and a bit larger for being an Over-The-Ear headphone. The earpads and headband are both amply cushioned for a very comfortable fit. Let’s say very comfortable. The earpads are black, and the underside of the headband (either blue or gray) has a sporty-looking, perforated surface. Around-the-ear design let’s you listen comfortably for hours on end. Each earcup houses a 40mm driver. They can swivel automatically into a flat position for easy storage. The headband is also very friendly and flexible and fits any head size very comfortably.

Controls and buttons are located in both earcups. The right earcup’s outer side panel holds volume controls (which work independently, not together with, your mobile device’s) and a toggle switch that handles Play & Pause/Call Answer/Call End/Track Skip functions. The left earcup houses the NFC touch, and the side panel houses the Power button, a Bluetooth status LED, and a micro USB connection. There’s also a Reset pinhole in case things go horribly wrong, and the microphone pinhole is located next to it. Unfortunately, there is no audio port in the headphone for wired mode listening. The buttons are nice and responsive.

A built-in microphone makes hands-free phone calls very convenient. Once your phone is paired, simply press the phone button on the earpiece to accept incoming calls, and press it again to end the conversation. Very simple.

Battery & Connectivity

Sony MDR-ZX770BT Bluetooth Stereo Headphone can be used only wirelessly using Bluetooth audio streaming with AAC and aptX support. In our test, connecting the headphones to an iPhone 6s and Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge was a quick and very simple process. When you turn on the headphone for the first time it turns on the Bluetooth as well. Just tap the MDR-ZX770BT on your device Bluetooth menu to connect and you are good to go. You can also access all of your favorite streaming services from your smart device to your headphones in a single touch with Near Field Communication (NFC). The Bluetooth operation range is up to 30 feet (Normal Bluetooth Connection Range). Very solid connection and clear sound and there was no disconnection during the test.

The MDR-ZX770BT battery life is awesome. It really meets the 17 hours playback battery life (depending on usage) which claimed by Sony. It takes roughly 2.5 hours to reach a full charge (which took less than that during our test). For hands-free calling, you can speak freely for up to 17 hours or up to 450 hours of stand-by.

Other than the headphone and charging cable, there are no other accessories in the box which is a bit surprising at the given price range. At least a carrying pouch. And a Micro-USB charging cable is included for when it’s time to charge the headset either from your PC, or a USB charger. Overall the connectivity and battery life are both satisfying.

Sound & Performance

We have been using it for a week now and we tested everything in the device. In terms of sound, the MDR-ZX770BT delivers a balanced, and accurate sound for an exceptional listening experience which makes versatile across genres. It gives the Beat Response Control for tight bass. The lows are well represented, but bass presence is lacking. Not too Bassy, and it also does not get too loud to disturb. Very balanced and solid sound. What we mostly liked in the device.

The sound quality is set to the “Standard” mode (SBC high quality mode) as the default setting. You can switch to other sound modes learn  Switching the sound quality mode

The comfort level is outstanding. We used it for more than 2 hours listening to different types of music for sound test and we were not disturbed at all. Gets high score for it.

Conclusion

Sony MDR-ZX770BT is an excellent set of wireless headphone with balanced sound quality, long lasting battery life, strong wireless connectivity and a premium design at the price range of $100. It can be a great device for your everyday listening of your favorite playbacks. The only drawback the device has is that it only works wirelessly and you can’t use it wired. And, also can’t be a good option for use at the gym too. If you are after even great sound quality with Active Noise Cancellation feature and wired version from SONY by paying a few extra bucks, then you can have a look at the BN version Sony MDRZX770BN.

Sony MDR-ZX770BT Bluetooth Stereo Headphone is possibly a great device with great value. It is among the Best Wireless Headphones under $100 you can pick in the market.
